100% RWS-certified extra-fine merino wool. Soft, natural, and breathable.

The Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) covers areas including animal welfare, land management, wool traceability, and certain social practices throughout the supply chain.

We chose an extrafine 19.5-micron merino wool that’s especially soft and designed to be worn directly against the skin.

The finer the wool fiber, the softer and more flexible it feels. Of course, everyone’s skin is different, so if you have a wool allergy or very sensitive skin, it’s best to be a little cautious.

Yes. L’Original is knitted with three strands of yarn on a 5-gauge machine, giving it a rich, plush knit that’s seriously warm.

Good news: wool doesn’t need to be washed all that often.

Most of the time, a little fresh air is all it needs. When necessary, hand-wash your sweater in cold water with a wool detergent, then lay it flat to dry on a towel.

And one important rule: no hangers. Knitwear prefers to be folded.

L’Original fits true to size.

Choose your usual size for a more classic fit, or size up if you like a looser, more oversized look.

For reference, I usually wear a size S, but I prefer L’Original in a size M.

How to choose your size

The easiest way: take a sweater you love the fit of, lay it flat, and compare its measurements with our size chart.

For the chest, measure from armpit seam to armpit seam.

The knit has a naturally flexible feel.

Size down for a more fitted look, or size up if you prefer it a little looser.

At Castine, we do have a bit of a soft spot for oversized.

Email us at contact@castineparis.com and let us know which size and color you’re interested in.

If enough of you ask for the same thing, we’ll do our very best to make it happen.

Pre-orders are open until September 20.

At that point, if we’ve reached the minimum number of orders needed, we’ll start production. The sweaters will then be knitted in Normandy and shipped for delivery in mid-November.

The yarn has already been reserved to keep us on schedule, and quantities are limited.

Once it’s gone, it’s gone. But if there’s enough demand, we may be able to make another batch — it’ll just arrive a little later.

And if we don’t reach the minimum needed to start production? You’ll receive a full refund.

Payment is taken when you place your pre-order.

That’s what helps us fund and get production underway.

Delivery is expected in mid-November.

Production starts on September 21 and takes around a month. After that, each order needs to be checked, packed, and shipped.

Pre-ordering helps us produce as closely as possible to actual demand, so we don’t end up making stock we don’t need.

You have 30 days from receiving your order to change your mind and send the sweater back to us. Just email us at contact@castineparis.com. If you’re returning it after delivery, the sweater must be unworn and have all its original tags attached. Return shipping costs are your responsibility.

You’ll receive a full refund. You can also cancel your order before it ships by emailing us at contact@castineparis.com.

In the spirit of full transparency, cancelling once production has started isn’t exactly ideal for a brand trying to make only what’s needed. But the decision is yours, and we respect it.

If not, you can of course return your sweater for a refund.

In France, at a Normandy workshop certified Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant — a French label recognizing exceptional craftsmanship.

That’s where every sweater is knitted, assembled, and finished.

Our merino wool comes from Australia, one of the world’s leading sources for exceptionally fine merino.

We chose a 19.5-micron fiber for its softness and plush feel. The wool comes from an Italian mill and is spun between Italy and Poland.

Yes, we’re pretty picky about our wool. With a sweater, that’s where everything starts.

We would have loved to.

We looked. A lot. The idea of making a sweater in France from French wool was pretty hard to resist. But so far, we haven’t found a French merino wool with exactly the fineness and softness we wanted for L’Original.

Ours is 19.5 microns. The finest French wools we found were closer to 21 microns, which makes for a slightly less soft sweater. (With microns, the lower the number, the finer — and softer — the fiber.)

We’re still looking. We haven’t given up yet.

Our wool comes from farms and a mill certified to the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS).

The certification covers areas including animal welfare, land management, and fiber traceability.

Very fair question. There are already plenty out there.

But we were looking for something pretty specific: a colorful, fashion-forward sweater made from a beautiful natural fiber, with great craftsmanship and wool whose sourcing and production standards are properly monitored.

We couldn’t really find it.

So we made it.

Castine isn’t perfect, and we don’t pretend to be. But we do try to make thoughtful choices — and, more importantly, to be clear about what they are.

The material.
100% merino wool. No synthetic fibers in the sweater.

The craftsmanship.
L’Original is knitted in France, in a Normandy workshop certified Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant.

The production.
We work on a pre-order basis so we can make as closely as possible to actual demand and avoid unnecessary excess stock.

The end of life.
The sweater is made from a single material — 100% wool — with no superwash treatment. A simple composition that makes it easier to recycle.

And above all, it’s made to be worn for years.

We chose not to cut too many corners.

High-quality extrafine merino wool, French craftsmanship under good working conditions, small production runs, and meticulous finishing all come at a cost.

We’d rather make less, but make it well.

And create a sweater you’ll still be excited to pull out of your closet years from now — and maybe even pass on one day.
